India got Independence back in 1947 and since than India has fought 4 wars with Pakistan(1947-48,1965,1971 and 1999) and 1 with China in 1962.India has also faced many violent clashes with China and Pakistan. Terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, Insurgency in North-Eastern region and Naxalism in many parts of our country were among the many factors that are affecting India since a long time. Amid these issues one important thing is missing that is a National Security Doctrine.

National Security Doctrine will be a guide book for our government that will tell what to do in any type of condition. In short we can say that National Security Doctrine will be the ‘Constitution of National Security’ .There is a need of NSD because in many cases there was a conflict in decision making from the executive side because nothing was clear that what to do in that situation.

During the ‘Operation Parakram’ , many soldiers of Indian armed forces were killed in action because there was no proper sequence of deployment which could be followed. So a Cold Start Doctrine was formed by Indian Armed Forces to tackle this deployment issue.
India has its own Nuclear Policy but not a policy for Complete security.

Many allied countries and countries having hostile relations with India have their National security strategy and these Strategies are getting updated with time but we are not even having it. And taking the recent incident then, Pakistan also published its own National Security Strategy and that is a learning lesson for India.

National Security Doctrine will not only focus on the factors like Sovereignty, Territorial Integrity and such issues but also guide us in other aspects like Health security, Energy security, Cyber security etc.
The responsibility of making this NSD will be on National Security Council that is headed by National Security Advisor. The creation of NSD first required an integrated commander of armed forces called the Chief of Defence Staff and this post was formed. So, it means that the higher authority is also concerned about it and we can expect a National Security Doctrine in coming years. It will be very important in national growth and development.
