A Military Doctrine also , known as the doctrine of Mutually Assured Destruction, which states that when two Adversaries Possess nuclear weapons , neither of them is likely to use them. This is because both sides are likely to suffer severe losses from a Nuclear attack , irrespective of who attacks first. The MAD doctrine is considered an application of “Nash Equilibrium , wherein the threat of a strong retaliatory attacks prevents both sides from initiating a conflict. The result is lasting prevention of a nuclear attack.

The doctrine has been criticized for assuming that the victim of the first attack will possess sufficient capabilities after the attack to retaliate strongly. The Primary initiation of MAD doctrine began during the Cold war from 12 March 1947 – 3 dec 1989 ( including Berlin crisis of 1961 ) when the two forces ie of United state of America and the Soviet union both Possessed Nuclear Armory deterred any Full scale invasion scenario, however were engaged in small scale proxy wars all those years. It was also responsible for Arms Race which led to struggle keeping a second strike/ retaliation strike capability. The MAD doctrine keeps on applying even Post conclusion of the cold war.

What the MAD doctrine means for NATO and Russia, I will leave to them. What it means for us is exactly nothing. China knows we have nuclear weapons; they still provoke and attack daily. They still make a great pretense of agreeing to talk, but have zero interest in talking about anything other than: 'India, please explain how you will do everything we ask you to do, because that is how we talk to our own people who obey.' Pakistan knows we have nuclear weapons, they are training terrorists as we speak, and routinely engage in provocative behaviors. They deny we attacked anything, but did bomb our airfield in broad daylight. MAD is 1970s thinking, we are better off figuring out how to deal with China and Pakistan; none of us can use the weapon against each other.
