Indian, Pakistani officials meet under Indus Commission framework

Tue, 31 May 2022   |  Reading Time: < 1 minute

New Delhi, May 30 (PTI) India and Pakistan on Monday held deliberations on issues relating to water sharing under the framework of the Indus Commission.

The meeting in Delhi will continue on Tuesday as well, according to the Pakistani High Commission. A Pakistani delegation is in India for the 118th meeting of the Pakistan-India Permanent Indus Commission.

“Today, 1st session of 118th meeting of the Pakistan-India Permanent Indus Commission was held in New Delhi. Pakistani delegation was led by Syed Muhammad Mehr Ali Shah. 2nd session will continue tomorrow,” the Pakistan High Commission tweeted. Under the Indus Water Treaty (IWT) signed between India and Pakistan in 1960, all the waters of the eastern rivers — Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi — amounting to around 33 million acre feet (MAF) annually is allocated to India for unrestricted use.

The waters of western rivers – Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab – amounting to around 135 MAF annually have been assigned largely to Pakistan. India is permitted to construct the run of the river plants on western rivers with limited storage as per criteria specified in the treaty.

Under the provisions of Article VIII(5) of the Indus Waters Treaty, the Permanent Indus Commission is required to meet at least once a year.

Meeting and talking with Pakistan is utter foolishness. We are wasting our time. Here is what Pakistan wants: Kashmir for free. Then they want India to self-destruct. I am sure they have other, non-negotiable demands. I am sure their generals want money for free as well, and an agreement that we will lose all cricket matches. Most Pakistani elites feel entitled to these things. Even I, an ordinary civilian without any connection to the Pakistani or Indian government, know this. Why doesn't the Indian government? As a civilian, there is only one thing I am very happy to vote in favor of giving to Pakistan. That would be our invaluable human resources; Indian citizens who work tirelessly for Pakistan, fly the Pakistani flag in their universities, work toward toward the creation of an Islamic Caliphate in India. These people are Hindus and these people are Muslim (religion does not dictate treasonous behaviors). Personally, my family temple (Sharada temple) is just across the border in POK. It is in ruins. Yes, I intend to rebuild it when I can. When I can go there with my children and grandchildren, undeterred, without a passport, when I can watch a polo match in Gilgit, re-learn the local languages and dialects, and visit the places where my gurus sat and attained enlightenment, walk unimpeded where my ancestors lived for thousands of years before their displacement, I'll support conversations with Pakistan. Until then, we should not talk to terrorists or occupiers.
