Blinken says US-Philippines defence treaty covers Chinese attack in South China Sea

Washington DC [US], July 12 (ANI): The United States has reaffirmed its commitment to defend the Philippines against a Chinese attack in the South China Sea (SCS), under their Mutual Defense Treaty.

On the fifth anniversary of an international ruling dismissing China’s claims in the SCS, Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Sunday said nowhere is the rules-based maritime order under greater threat than in the South China Sea.

Tensions have remained high since March between the Philippines and China, after hundreds of Chinese boats were spotted in the disputed portions of the hotly contested South China Sea.

The top US diplomat said China continues to coerce and intimidate Southeast Asian coastal states, threatening freedom of navigation in this critical global throughway.

“We also reaffirm that an armed attack on Philippine armed forces, public vessels, or aircraft in the South China Sea would invoke US mutual defense commitments under Article IV of the 1951 US-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty,” the statement said.

Blinken further called on China to abide by its obligations under international law and cease its provocative behaviour. “We call on the PRC to abide by its obligations under international law, cease its provocative behaviour, and take steps to reassure the international community that it is committed to the rules-based maritime order that respects the rights of all countries, big and small,” it added.

China claims sovereignty over almost the entire South China Sea and has overlapping territorial claims with Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Taiwan.

Even five years after an international arbitration court in the Hague ruled that the majority of China’s maritime claims in the SCS had no legal basis, Beijing’s behaviour has not been altered much. According to the Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative, it continues to act largely unrestrained in one of the world’s busiest shipping routes. (ANI)

It’s a good time for the Philippines to destroy Chinese fishing vessels transgressing into its, internationally approved, territorial waters, of course after giving those vessels a fair warning to leave the said area. It’ll be interesting to see the Chinese response given that they know fully well that any counter attack against the Philippines will bring them in direct conflict with all the international navies based in the South China Sea. Given the strong, pro-nationalist, pressure within China, Xi Jinping might choose to engage in a conflict in the South China Sea but then China have to divert a majority of its resources to its eastern front & that will give India a chance to recapture Aksai Chin & the Trans Karakoram Tract. Pakistan, in its current state between the frying pan & the fire will not be much of a problem for India. However, I guess that, in case of any such aggression by the Philippines, China will suppress all domestic pressures and, at the most, it will strongly condemn Philippines actions & will pressurize North Korea to make ominous war threats so as to get international powers back on the negotiating table where they’ll need Chinese aid to calm down North Korea.
