Behind Kashmir Files

KAMAL BARUAH
Fri, 25 Mar 2022   |  Reading Time: 3 minutes

They sneaked in the battlefield, packed their kits, locked travelling trunk inside barracks and finally jumped onto the Kashmir. Life of a soldier moves on, where the chaos and lawlessness took over the valley. Most of them were just 18+, nothing knew about combating terrorism and instead planned a special celebration after Republic Day Parade. The contingent seemed to be filled with joie de vivre after the best marching trophy at Rajpath but an order shocked them as horrid nightmare.

The Transit Camp at Race Course was spooked that night as never before. All previous postings had been cancelled by Vayu Bhawan. They had no idea about. It was the day prior to the grand finale of RD Parade 1990, Rawalpora shooting incident took place. On the morning of 25th January, motorcycle-borne terrorists fired from automatic weapons at unarmed IAF personnel killing Squadron Leader Ravi Khanna, Corporal D.B. Singh, Corporal Uday Shankar and Aircraftman Azad Ahmad, while they were waiting at the bus stand.

The military strategy towards the valley had been reviewed. Soldiers moved with convoys at Jammu-Srinagar highway. Men in blue became no longer friendly with the valley. Pak sponsored terrorism misguided Kashmiri youth on the name of azadi and insurgency by JKLF escalated after the disputed assembly election in 1987 that forced 5 lakh Kashmiri pundits to leave the valley after a campaign of genocide started since 19 January 1990.

The recent movie ‘The Kashmir Files’ helped to awaken many to the horrors of genocides. I had a special connection with Kashmir valley as I had also been part of that RD Parade contingent over the timeline of Kashmir during 90s. Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was then the Home Minister during VP Singh government whose fame rivalled that of Chief Minister Faruq Abdullah for appointing Jagmohan as Governor. Soon the CM resigned, the Governor suggested the dissolution of the Assembly and JKLF conspired to incite riots, violence against the Kashmiri Pundits.

No one has listened and looked at them, who have strength of over half a million. This is how the human rights reckoned as trivial Kashmir. The world has also turned a blind eye to over 1000 murders of innocent unarmed and helpless men, women and children which had taken place in the valley over the span of one and half years in the hands of trained self-styled freedom fighter of Kashmir. They were packed shoulder to shoulder on the road and became refugee in their own country. Refugees suffered, died of infection and disease in collided camp.

Kashmir belongs as much to Kashmiri Hindus as belongs to Kashmiri Muslims. The propriety of the citadel of human wakening and freedom have ignited the complete exodus of the entire race while the world civilized nations failed to respond to the barbaric uprooting of the entire race of people.

The valley also got suffering from the controversial law AFSPA at the same time, soldiers faced threat from militant for being uniform personnel. Facing QRT was beyond the dreadful wild-weather of winds, rains and cold bite. As nights were compulsory black out, we lost our way in dark under covering of sudden snowfall. The rays of morning sun reflected back from the thin blanket of snow trapped over the surface that blurred our eyes. The silent valley was unpredictable and catastrophically unsafe. You never know when a bullet from AK-47 or a rocket launcher could come down.

There was mortal shelling on forward posts along the LOC. Lives were never easy. The troops lay barbed wire at the most wonderful mountain valley road at Uri-Muzaffrbad. Normal life often came to a grinding halt amid fear and terrorism by separatists but the most unforgettable memory of Kashmir is the colours of the mountains that changes at different hours of a day. We saw stunning snowfall hit the blue mountain all of a sudden. Amidst the breeze, it dotted with olive green military posts. Those picturesque panoramas are not just beautiful but covered by tall grass where cannabis grows abundantly. Army intensifies search for infiltrators along the three tier border.

Over the years terrorist attacked pilgrimage and instigated the valley to a conflict zone. Yet our energy and enthusiasm for life was very high. We went besides the Jhelum and Indus, beneath the Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Ladakh in leisure despite unprovoked shelling over Jammu, Rajouri-Poonch. We also retaliate missiles befittingly at the cross borders at Kargil. We felt alive seeing the river flows abundantly. Hustle bustle of shikaras, houseboats and grace of the paradise suffered a major jolt. The travel & tourism failed to get a boost for ongoing unrest and uncertainty. Nevertheless Kashmiri Muslims struggle for basic needs of life. India being the great secular democratic country must do for Kashmiri refugees in the name of humanity.

In independent India, when we cannot seal our border, when a dynasty is fully corrupt (and ruins India for seventy years), serves as the key apologist and agent of foreign powers, and more importantly, when people do not defend themselves with weapons - these things will happen. Why Kashmir, this will happen in Mumbai. Try walking or driving on Friday because people say they are praying and shut traffic down. The notion that India should change entirely because of something written in a book penned in the 7th century, and adopt Arabic customs - is taken seriously and debated. In any other civic society, they'd be laughed out. While our cities and states, and the entire republic is run by thugs and extortionists, I saw first hand evidence of the same thugs running and hiding in fear when 15 teenaged boys attacked Mumbai (they were nowhere to be found, they were busy extorting local businesses). In independent, secular India, I see only bullies and thugs prevailing everywhere. We are feeling sorry for ourselves for sure. The plight of Kashmiri Pandits is horrifying, for sure. But I am not sure we need a ballywood movie to bring awareness, or concern about a real problem. We Indians have known about the genocide since it happened. What else do you think began in 1947, when Jinnah (the first known terrorist) sent Pakistani regulars (Afghans) dressed as Pathans to 'liberate' Kashmir? Do we really think we project power by marching up and down Rajpath, when anyone who wants to invade does so with ease? When we are weak, insist on bullying and subjugating our own people based on gender and caste, and refuse to take our defense seriously - of course others will find effective ways of killing us. When TV commentators call a terrorist 'Gandhian' and a freedom fighter, it is clear we have lost our marbles. What was preventing the Indian government from giving each Kashmiri Pandit massive amounts of weaponry? What is preventing Indians from imprisoning - under law - the thugs who rule the country, and live off extortion? Our culture of fear, corruption, and desire to hurt our own neighbors - more than any other factor - explains our entire history of serving as subjects of foreign powers. No other nation was ever ruled by so few, subjugated so many, for a 1000 years. We must confront our weakness and overcome. And more importantly, can we stop this hypocrisy and seek shelter in the notion that unless a ballywood movie is made about it, we will pretend it did not happen.

I was in central library Chandigarh few years back when I came across reading a book about "Kashmir shaivism" a interpretation by foreign author, jhon huges, but essentially a content from remarkable seer , ' swami Laxman joo' . This book in its preface tells about a person named vasugupta, who revealed the verses of "Shiva sutras" , incripted on a certain ' boulder's that he found after a directive from lord shiva itself in Kashmir. A supreme legacy of rishi Durvasa, Laxmanjoo, was a seer who had also been talked about making a heavy rainfall in the deserts of America at his visit over there sometime. That book comprised about invoking a supreme awakening in a person. I was astonished that how profound the culture would have been hence many centuries over there. I am from himachal, we have had tenents from Kashmir living with us for years. A very good family , amaizing courteous and sweet. Mr. And Mrs. Safaya. We still feel outblown with what they told us that happend to them at the time of exodus, how they escaped in a tanker. I can't write that well, but I realise , with there style of voice and courtesy , and a legit profound culture via. Laxmanjoo , that something happened which have teared there heart apart.
