AERO INDIA 2025: SPRINGBOARD TO A BILLION OPPORTUNITIES

Prof (Dr) DK Pandey  Sun, 09 Feb 2025   |  Reading Time: 5 minutes

The much-awaited 15th Edition of “Aero India 2025” is taking off at the “Yelahanka Air Force Station” on February 10, 2025, in Bengaluru, India’s information technology capital. This event is the largest international air show and aviation expo in Asia. Since 1996, Yelahanka has successfully hosted every edition of the gala event. The first three days are dedicated to business visitors, while the last two days are open to the general public.

Aero India is an aerospace and defence exhibition organised once every two years in Bangalore. The event aims to showcase numerous technologies produced in the military and aviation fields. Aero India 2025 is an entry point to explore advanced products and solutions from premier international companies across all aspects of air warfare including aircraft, avionics, defence systems, and aerospace services. By taking part in Aero India, India can accomplish several strategic objectives and prepare for emerging threats from both the East and the West.

Milestones of Aero India-2023

The 14th iteration of Aero India-2023, held from 13th–17th February at Bengaluru, Karnataka, set new benchmarks. It brought together over 100 nations, 809 exhibitors, and hosted a historic 53-aircraft Fly past, attracting a staggering seven lakh visitors over the five-day period.

A core initiative during Aero India-2023 emphasised start-ups whose Indian companies displayed at specific pavilions, including iDEX and India areas and Chiefs of Air Staff Conclave locations. The ‘Manthan’ event operated as the yearly start-up conference. During the initial Investor Hub event (iIH), Rs 200 crore was pledged to investors.

The Bandhan ceremony focused on B2B partnership formation while more than 250 partnerships worth Rs 75,000 crore were successfully concluded.

New Prospects

Aero India 2025 is a platform to expedite modernisation initiatives throughout the Indian Air Force (IAF). The operational superiority of the Indian Air Force relies on acquiring current-generation fighter aircraft and helicopters along with drone technologies. Aero India is an evaluation site facilitating defence purchase negotiations between international equipment manufacturers and potential acquisition clients. The event concentrates on investigating future fighter aircraft systems, advancing air refuelling techniques, and creating new capabilities for cyber warfare operations. The event would expedite domestic manufacturing capabilities while speeding up development to reduce dependency on foreign military supplies. Indigenous development and the Make in India initiative create domestic manufacturing and innovation since they are priority goals.

Industry professionals can leverage Aero India 2025 to explore commercial opportunities, forge business agreements, and engage in governmental meetings for Business-to-Business and Business-to-government interactions. This environment provides aerospace sector companies with an ideal platform to accelerate their growth and expansion activities.  Start-ups can delve into the future of the aviation industry by combining innovative possibilities with emerging opportunities, fostering a sense of excitement and motivation.

The participation of global players like the F-35 of USAF, the Russian Su-57E, and the fighter jet Gripen-E from SAAB defence underscores the international significance of Aero India 2025.  Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) plans to showcase next-generation equipment across 14 distinct categories, with defence communication at the forefront alongside avionics, electronic warfare, and AI-based solutions. The air show will feature numerous exhibits, including Weapon Systems, radar, and various Unmanned Warfare systems.

Goals and Targets

The event will boost India’s efforts to become Atmanirbhar.  The goal to achieve a target of defence export of $5 billion by 2025 will be reinforced. The salient aspects of the development endeavours include:

(a)        Strengthening Defence Industrial Base: Aero India has become the kind of commercial opportunity that allows Indian enterprises in the defence sector to demonstrate their potential, find partners among foreign defence companies, and develop their technological competence. This is one of the reasons why Aero India has become extremely important. A relationship could result in increased indigenous production of defence goods and decreased reliance on imported products from other countries.

(b)       Strengthening International Relations: As a result, this is a significant opportunity to become acquainted with prospective donors and establish working relationships with embassies. For lobbying, it can be utilised to bring about cooperation in the execution of joint military operations, the exchange of intelligence, or the fight against terrorism.

(c)        Technological Advancements:  Aero India facilitates the introduction of emerging technologies for modern military arms and systems. These include stealth aerial platforms, hypersonic systems, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAS) and missiles. Such technological advantage will enhance India’s military might.

(d)       Capacity Building: The expo also provides a platform for members of the armed forces to become familiar with new and upgraded equipment, as well as training and operational measures. The dividends from the event include being better prepared and more effective in carrying out missions against adversaries.

Way Ahead

The lessons learnt from recent conflicts like Russia-Ukraine, Gaza, Iran-Israel, etc, explicitly direct us to be self-sufficient in the defence sector. Considering that China is continuing to be aggressive in the Indo-Pacific region and that Pakistan is still dealing with economic instability and political turbulence, a comprehensive national security plan must be formulated.  On top of that, China is introducing cutting-edge aerial platforms such as the sixth-generation J-36 and J-20s, warships, and UAS. India must utilise this opportunity.

The opportunities presented by Aero India 2025 should allow India to improve its readiness to deal with potential threats posed by adversaries from both the East and the West. India needs to explore and create a roadmap for the accomplishment of the following objectives:

(a)     Strengthening the Defence Landscape is a crucial aspect that India needs to focus on. The acquisition of advanced weaponry, including second and third-tier systems such as A2/AD capabilities, long-range precision missiles, and underwater warfare systems, is essential to counter potential threats in the Indian Ocean and beyond. This emphasis on defense readiness should instill a sense of security and confidence in India’s defense capabilities.

(b)       Transfer of Technology (ToT): The Indian defence industry is making sincere efforts to develop jet aero engines, High altitude long endurance (HALE) UASs, etc. The options may be explored at Aero India for ToT of design as well as production of these platforms and systems.

(c)        Invest in Cybersecurity: To protect friendly forces against attacks from opponents, such as executive attacks and fake news attacks, enhance your cyber security by taking more significant steps.  Increasing the amount of work output and upgrading the capabilities of physical structures and human resources may be considered for Cybersecurity.

(d)       Develop Capabilities in Space: The design and development of space technologies that can provide early warning, observation of opponent activities, enhanced communication networks, and other forms of assistance to military operations. In addition to launching military satellites, it may involve establishing a national space agency office.

(e)        Strengthen diplomatic ties by increasing the frequency of interactions with other nations that may have political goodwill with the country and by trying to obtain security assurances in the event of national disasters.

(f)        Raise Awareness Around the Maritime Domain: In view of future military actions, the Indian Ocean region (IOR) and Indo-Pacific regions are theatres of concern for India. The coverage should be improved in locations where these potential aggressors aim to travel and perform monitoring.

Aero India 2025 is an essential platform for India to develop military capabilities that address defensive challenges from adversaries in both Eastern and Western domains.

Conclusion

Aero India 2025 presents India with multiple opportunities to enhance operational readiness through technological improvements, international alliances, and powerful diplomatic relationships that strengthen nationality defence. Private firms can communicate with one another to improve their defence industry trade and production capacities. India’s achievement at this event depends on both developing specialised solutions to resolve critical challenges and leveraging opportunities to boost defence capabilities.

The fact that it will be the most prominent Aero India ever accomplished is evidence of the growing power of the aerospace and defence sectors, as well as the rise of a powerful and independent New India. The event is slated for new heights and a progressive road ahead for the powerful country, India.
